Masquerade Ch1"You're assigning me to this shrimp?" Alexander asked incredulously. The 'shrimp' in question was standing in front of the commander's desk. He ran his fingers through his hair, bored. Alexander was nineteen, and generally accepted amongst women of the nearby town as a handsome devil. and the newly promoted rookie was at least a head shorter than him. Intelligent green eyes glanced out from beneath a shock of red hair.
"Alexander," the commander said warningly. The rookie gave Xander look. The commander cleared his throat quietly. "Got something to say?" The redhead smiled cockily.
"This shrimp, Mr. Alexander, is the best rookie since your own self. I scored higher in sharpshooting than you, amongst other things." Alexander was surprised. It wasn't exactly easy to beat his old record. In fact, this new recruit was the only one he knew of that had. And it wasn't exactly small news. His friends had been buzzing with it for quite some time. He'd just expected someone... taller.

Masquerade Ch2Almost two months of training together hadn't told Xander any more than he already knew. Drey could run. He could use a crossbow, swing a saber.It was when Sergei, the fencing master, had them fight each other that Drey revealed the grit that he held back ordinarily.
Ten minutes into the match, and Drey still hadn't given an inch. It was a demonstration for the newest recruits. Most of whom would be returning home before the week was gone. They watched Xander and Drey with open admiration. A few had even started placing bets. Xander swung his saber at Drey's legs, and the boy jumped over the blade. Xander had to stop fooling himself. He couldn't go easy on Drey and hope to get anywhere. So Xander stepped up the pace. Drey matched him easily, light on his feet. Xander had to take a step back as Drey's saber suddenly broke through and came within inches of his neck. And Drey hadn't extended hisarm fully. If he had, the match would have been over already. Which struck Xander as odd.
