:bulletpink:All bids are to be made in USD since, well, that is what I am currently in need of.

:bulletpurple:To bid please reply to the appropriate bidding string below.

:bulletpink:Starting bid is 10$ and bids must go up by 50cents minimum.

:bulletpurple:Bidding will go until May 24th or until no additional bids have been made for 3 days.

:bulletpink: No buy out, you must bid to win.

oh oh, you only have a stallion and need a mare to breed him to?  No fears, I have an anomoly mare as well, she however is not a dom.

:bulletpink:All bids are to be made in USD since, well, that is what I am currently in need of.

:bulletpurple:To bid please reply to the appropriate bidding string below.

:bulletpink:Starting bid is 8$ and bids must go up by 50cents minimum.

:bulletpurple:Bidding will go until May 24th or until no additional bids have been made for 3 days.

Hey guys,
I tend to be curious about things especially when it comes to the way people react to certain things so I thought I'd throw this out here and maybe I can learn something new or gain some new insight etc on the matter(s).

Over the years I've watched numerous times where people get incredibly upset, irritated, frustrated, etc etc if another artist uses what they deem to be a 'shortcut'.
These so called shortcuts which I've seen people whine and moan about are:
Tracing, Photomanipulations, Matte paintings (paint overs), using software to paint over photos with little to no effort.

I am sure there are other things that people whine and moan about but these are the ones I've seen the most complaints about.  So, I am curious.. what are your thoughts on this and most importantly WHY?

I personally don't see anything wrong with using any of these so called shortcuts and have also been able to learn new things from using such techniques.

So lay your thoughts and opinions on me just please remember to be respectful in the comments as we are all merely sharing points of views and opinions, not trying to convert others to our way of thinking.

It's that time of the year again...

Journal Entry: Mon May 13, 2013, 8:56 PM
Well, actually I haven't had to do this in quite some time but....
So, our car is a great little critter and I love it dearly.  It's taken me to California and back twice (man it hated the Rockies, but it was a trooper and climbed them anyway). The critter also helped deliver all the amazing x-mas cards from the Christmas Card Project dA did this past x-mas season. It's taken me to HQ and a few devMEETs, it even took $haldron home once.  It had the pleasure of getting a brand new engine 100K miles ago.  In my time of owning it I've also replaced the thermostat twice, the water pump, the radiator, had the transmission repaired and had various other little odds and ends done.  The one thing I never had repaired was the CV joint  so... well, let's just say that's went to shit now (I can still drive the car but it's probably safer not to).  The transmission decided to start dieing on me again after taking it over the Rockies and with time it's only gotten worse and at this point my 2nd gear is a complete douchebag (and a real hazard in the winter with slick roads).

Okay, I know learning about my car is pretty boring but I promise there is a point to this... So now that we have all gotten to get to know my car a little bit.. I've come to a point where I need to decide if it's worth pouring more money into the critter or just letting it die with a little bit of dignity.  The biggest problem with this is money :noes: ... so being poor folk, we simply can't go out and buy a new car on our own because.. well finances :noes:... on the other hand.. we also can't afford all the repairs needed.. SO....

Commission Time!

It's like Adventure Time, just better!  :eager:
No but seriously.  I am opening my commissions in hopes of making a little extra money to go towards repairing the critter or finding it a nice resting place and us a new critter to drive.  So let me get to the nitty gritty:

Ideally I'd love to mostly do Circle Vector animals for people (and I think those seem to be the popular thing among my watchers anyway)
10$ for a Circle Vector Animal of your choice.
Examples:

10$ for a Line Art of your choice (please note that I do not draw humans).
Examples:

20$ for a simple no or minimum background of your character of choice (please note that I do not draw humans).
Examples:

30$ for a character of your choice with full background (please note that I do not draw humans).
Examples:

5$ Vector Sheep of your choice
Examples:

I can also offer prints of any of my photographs, though price would vary based on what size you'd want and where it would need to be shipped to.
Examples:

So erm, yeah... I think that is all.
:blowkiss:

Welcome to Painted Portrait, a new Interview series focusing on traditional artists worth keeping an eye on.  Painted Portrait interviews aim to give the community more insight into talented traditional artists and how they came to be successful with their art.  Today we are interviewing ~SchweizerArts.

Thank you for allowing me to interview you, let's start off by having you introduce yourself.
-My name is Wolfgang Schweizer. Born 1966, grown up in southwest Germany, moved to the USA in 2007.

I am a painter (mostly acrylics and mixed media, epoxy), metalsmith (mostly copper, brass, silver, steel and natural gemstones) and composer (programs: Ableton Live and sometimes Fl Studio)

What inspires your paintings?
As I paint mainly abstract, I develop most of the paintings according to my own subjective rules of proportion and color.
If something in a painting doesn`t look right to me, I have to change it and go on and on until finally everything matches together in my eyes.

What are your favorite mediums to work with and why do you enjoy them?
-acrylics: in opposite to oil colors which I used in the past there is no turpentine odor. Even more important is the easy cleaning of brushes. This is most important for me, as I mostly use colors with a clean brush, so they don`t get messed up by residues of leftover colors in the brush. I mix colors usually on the canvas.

-gel pens and ink pens
work good together with acrylics, especially on paper and wood, but also on not too rough canvas. They make precise outlines, and when I make epoxy paintings they are necessary for the details.

-digital painting: I mostly use GIMP and Artrage.
From all programs I tested (including the most expensive ones), Artrage simulates real painting the best in my opinion. It just takes a while until you find out which tool to use to get the result you want to have. For example you can use the "pencil - shader" tool for painting on layers and then mix the colors with the "knife-tiny frost" tool to get a glazing effect similar to thinned acrylic or oil colors.

-alcohol and water based inks. They make crazy marbling effects when mixed together. It just takes a while to produce the inks yourself.

- copper, silver. Easy to work, because they are soft. If it wasn`t such expensive, I would use more fine silver instead of Sterling, because it doesn`t oxidize when it gets soldered. That makes jewelry making much easier.
-Steel. Sometimes I like to work with harder stuff, and especially stainless steel takes a high shine when it`s polished.
-Lapis lazuli. This is my favorite stone because of the color and because it is relatively easy to cut, doesn`t splinter easily and takes a high shine when polished.

What are your tools of the trade?
-painting: sable brushes, sable/synthetic mix brushes, Liquitex heavy body acrylic colors and any other good brand acrylic colors, Liquitex soluvar archival varnish, glazing medium, self made stay wet box for acrylic colors (made from a walmart box with lid, a styrofoam block, kitchen towel, 2 layers of parchment paper which get pinned onto the styrofoam block that almost floats on water in the box and is wrapped with paper from a kitchen towel roll).

-jewelry making: Dremel rotary tool strongest version with many burrs, cutting discs, sanding discs, polishing wheels and so on.
Ball peen hammer, Jewelers hammer from Fretz (expensive but worth the money).
Sanding paper of various grades with a mandrel for use with the Dremel rotary tool (one of the best inventions, which makes polishing much easier and cheaper).

-music: Ableton Live composing software (DAW). My favorite composing program. Up to now I couldn`t find anything I was not able to do with it.
The new version 9 even has a function to transform wav recodrings to MIDI.

How long, on average, does it take you to finish one of your paintings?
-Acrylic paintings: can take 2 months or longer. Sometimes it goes faster, maybe even a week. But mostly it takes longer than a week.
-ink/acrylic paintings: often faster than pure acrylic paintings, as the process of mixing inks on the paper together already creates kind of a painting by itself.
-epoxy and glitter paintings, mirror paintings: several days. The epoxy resin needs time to dry before applying a new layer.
-digital paintings: from 1-2 day to weeks, depending on the applied technique. The fastest to make are pure fractal paintings consisting mainly of fractals or parts of them that are mixed together using layer operations in the program GIMP.

Do you have a vision of what your piece will look like before starting or do you go with whatever comes to you?
Sometimes I know already relative exactly how a painting should look in the end, but it is more like an impression I have in mind than a real picture. If I had a real picture already in mind with all proportions and colors, the paintings would get finished much faster.

With jewelry it is different. Most of my pieces I use to make at the moment take about half a day or a day to finish. This is the pure manual work time. Often I plan almost every step of making a piece in mind before I touch a tool. That takes a few hours.

A song usually takes a few days to finish. Similar to painting I sometimes have an idea or impression of how the song should sound.

At what age did you begin painting and do you have any formal training (art school etc)?
I tried to draw skeletons of animals that I saw in a book when I was in Kindergarten, I guess. The first art experience however was building a big elephant from plastic parts (slightly similar to Lego) in Kindergarten and making Rhinos and Elephants from play dough.

When I was in elementary school I got an oil painting set from my uncle for Christmas. I didn`t know how to use it, so I just tried around and painted Alpine landscapes on a canvas board.

Later I used the leftovers of this painting set again when I was about 16, and I started drawing and painting in a more serious way. As I had no models, I drew and painted my hands and self portraits and sometimes landscapes and still lives.

During high school I used to draw little ink scrawlings onto the paper on the table, while I was listening to the teacher. These scrawlings were the beginning of my abstract art.

During University I painted with watercolors and oil colors, in the beginning still figurative, later more and more abstract.
From 1996 on, when I joined an art association in Freiburg, Germany, painting began to take more and more space in my life. I was 30 years old then.

I stopped painting from 2001 up to 2006. Then I started painting with watercolors and gel and ink pens again.
In 2007 I started using acrylic colors. After I moved to the US I finally decided to make art a main part of my life, and I tried out many new materials and techniques. I was 41 then.

I didn`t attend art school. Sometimes I read art books and articles on the internet or watch tutorials on youtube, but mostly I learn from trying.
That was different for making jewelry. This would have been impossible without detailed reading of books.

music: I had piano lessons during middle school/high school, but I stopped it to play electric bass in rock bands.
The electronic composing I started in the end of 2009, and I make the music I like to hear. That is the only criteria in most of my artwork. I produce what I like myself.

Are there any artists or other inspirations which have helped you progress with your art?
In the art association in Germany we often discussed techniques. This was interesting and helped to a certain grade (one thing I heard then was from a painter from Tadschikistan. When we discussed glazing technique in oil painting he told me, if the colors won`t stick on an intermediate layer of varnish, you can rub a piece of garlic over the varnish, and the colors will stick).

In the US I got to know a jeweler who gave me hints and tips, and the people from the shop were I used to sell my jewelry and paintings for 3 years gave me good advice and ideas also. Impossible to mention all the other people that influenced and helped me.

What is the most rewarding aspect of completing a work of art for you?
The feeling that it is done and everything fits.
If you polish a piece of jewelry, it often takes a long time until the final high shine appears. This moment, when the metal starts reflecting the light is hard to describe.

What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?
take advice, but don`t do exactly what everybody tells you to do, and don`t be satisfied with a piece of work before you really know from inside that it is finished.

Is there anything else you'd like to say in closing?
thanks for the interest in my art, and my website is at [link]

Equine Group Moderators needed.

Wed May 8, 2013, 9:25 AM
I am in need of Moderators for the following groups:

:iconunique-equines:

Moderating #Unique-Equines is mostly submission approval/rejections.  From time to time we get affiliate requests as well which require approval/rejection votes.  As a Moderator you would have the option to invite art work to the group gallery though it is not necessary if you did not want to do this, we also collect news from the Equine community each month to feature in our article that comes out on the 1st of each month.

Ideal candidates will:
:bulletred: know our group rules (listed on our front page)
:bulletred: be able to write in English (for backroom discussions as well as potentially having to explain to a member why their piece was rejected)
:bulletred: be familiar with the group platform (this is not a must but it does help)
:bulletred: be a team player (you absolutely must be able to work well within a team setting as we tend to work together as a unit of moderators)
:bulletred: be active (I would prefer to bring people on who can vote at least once a day)
:bulletred: be comfortable telling someone why their piece was rejected (this is something that we can help with if you are unsure of the wording)
:bulletred: be comfortable with tie breaking votes as these do happen from time to time in this group
:bulletred: be comfortable giving input on situations/ideas
:bulletred: be able to link to any Equine related news on dA that you find while browsing

Interested individuals may either note me directly at ^Astralseed or you may note #Unique-Equines.

:iconstylizedequines:

Moderating #StylizedEquines is mostly submission approval/rejections.  Though at this point I am looking to add one or two admins who can help move the group forward.  The groups original intent was to help other Equine Artists find their own personal style of drawing and as such, I'd like for the group to run challenges and or post blogs that can help artists with that.

Ideal candidates will:
:bulletblack: know our group rules (listed on our front page)
:bulletblack: be able to write in English (for backroom discussions as well as potentially having to explain to a member why their piece was rejected)
:bulletblack: be familiar with the group platform (this is not a must but it does help)
:bulletblack: be a team player (you absolutely must be able to work well within a team setting as we tend to work together as a unit of moderators)
:bulletblack: be active (I would prefer to bring people on who can vote at least once a day)
:bulletblack: be comfortable telling someone why their piece was rejected (this is something that we can help with if you are unsure of the wording)
:bulletblack: be comfortable giving input on situations/ideas
:bulletblack: be able to write useful blogs/articles for the group and or help organize challenges.

If you feel that you'd be able to help with challenges or useful blogs/articles for the group and want to be a part of the admin team for #StylizedEquines you can either note me directly at ^Astralseed or you may note the group.

MOAR Journal Spam - Personal Update

Journal Entry: Wed May 1, 2013, 8:11 PM
So first I want to apologize for all the recent spam.  So much art to upload, so many articles, journals and then I also tossed in livestreams.  Shame on me!!  Ha ha, and after I just posted 3 different articles today have another journal :P

So anyway, it's been quite a while since I've given a personal update and I keep pushing it out more and more because I don't want to overwhelm you all with so many journals.  So, raise your hand if you're still with me and love me regardless of how much I've been posting lately!  Raise your second hand if you are excited about all the things I post!  OKAY, cookies and or brownies for everyone who has both hands in the air!  YOU ROCK!

Okay, let me jump into all the horsie art stuff because it's kinda a big thing.. I know a lot of you don't watch me for my art at all, let alone to see silly horses over and over again.  That's cool, I can get behind that.  Please don't hold it against me though for enjoying drawing horses and wanting to share all of my ridiculous creations with you guys.  I know many of you have seen all of my #Pony-Exchange pieces over the last 2 years or so, this will be a continued trend still, however I have also recently acquired an amazing #Cavitto - Hale.  I'll be working on raising his Veratis Points so he can get cool things like wings and such so he can be even more amazing than he already is.  What that means for you is a lot of Hale art in your message center (much like last week just not quite such a fast pace anymore).  More cookies and brownies to anyone who loves Hale and actually wants to see more of him!  YAY YOU!
Okay so, we can't stop at Hale, that would hardly be worth me talking about all the horsie stuff :noes:.  So.. as some of you have probably (hopefully?) noticed that I've created my own equine breed here on dA.  What silly nonsense is this you ask?  Well, it's super fun awesome stuff... that is if you like drawing horses :eyes:... anyway, I've been submitting the journals for my breeds group (#Quirlicorns) through stash so that I can use journal CSS and while I've not been submitting those journals to show in my personal journals here, apparently you all still got them.  I think I have one or two more such journals to post over the coming days/weeks and then they should be few and far between.

Moving... ugh, when's the last time any of you have had to move?  It sucks, doesn't it?  Two years ago I moved into this house planning on it being long term... well, life had other plans apparently.  So here we are apartment hunting on extremely limited funds, with 2 dogs (one being a pit bull mix) and a cat, needing to be in calm areas with a small school with great special education teachers.  Oh, and did I mention this must all be found 200 miles away from where we currently live?  Yeah, it's been stressful to say the least.  I absolutely despise moving and now it can't even go fast or even semi easy.  With my fucked up back the idea of trying to pack boxes and or try to haul them is just unthinkable.  When I moved here two years ago, when my back sucked but wasn't as bad as it is now... after moving the following morning I woke up and wasn't sure if I could get up at all.  Like there was no movement in my back left and I wasn't sure if I could move my legs either.  It was very scary and I dread to think what would happen if I move things the way I did last time.  And then let's not forget everything that will need to be switched over.. new doctors, new school, new banks, etc etc etc... My head keeps spinning and I'm at a standstill because there is only so much I can do at this time etc.  So that is what is happening with our home situation..

I recently started going back to therapy after I was diagnosed with OCD.  The idea was for me to get therapy for the OCD but once I got into the therapists office and sat down and spoke with her we decided at this point it was more important to get a better grip on my anxiety because the move will bring out all kinds of triggers for it for me.  She's given me some great tips but it's a really slow process and well, only time will tell if I'll ever be able to do the things I used to without anxiety and panic attacks being an issue.. but at least I am getting closer to that inch by inch.

Still waiting to hear back on my disability claim.  I am hoping that it taking them this long after getting all my information is a good sign but we will see what happens next.  Hopefully I will hear from them soon and maybe they will send me to one of their doctors or something.  Either way, fingers crossed!

Okay, who's still with me here?  Good for you, have another cookie/brownie!  Alright, so my brain is going weeooooweoooweeooo or something along those lines.. I am sure there are a bunch of other important things happening in my day to day life but I simply can't think about them right now  (I guess they must not be that important afterall?)  Oh well...

Tell me about you!  What's new in your neck of the woods?  Tell me how much you love or hate my art/journal spam.  Just talk to me.  Yes you, you who's all quiet in the corner!  I want to know ALL of my watchers :)

All the love to you guys for being amazing and epic watchers (even the silent ones)
:blowkiss:

May 2013 Traditional Updates

Wed May 1, 2013, 9:18 AM

Gallery Makeover Project

Back in early March we started asking you all what kind of changes you'd like to see in regards to the Traditional Art Gallery Tree.  We've had some really great feedback and have even posted an updated revision of our original proposal based on your feedback.  We'd like to give you the chance to have your voice heard before any decisions are finalized so if you have not commented on our Gallery Makeover journal yet, please head on over to it and leave your feedback for us.  Traditional Art Gallery Makeover Updated Proposals

Traditionalists

#Traditionalists is a new group aimed at giving the traditional art community their own unique voice by giving the traditionalists a place to gather, organize, and inform others with the help and guidance of the traditional Community Volunteer team. The idea behind this project was to open the channels of communication between the traditional community and the traditional CVs so that we can all work together and develop a main hub for all things traditional.  If you haven't joined this group yet, we'd like to encourage you to do so.

Group Updates

For this month we don't really have any updates.  Everything is running smoothly and we've not had any issues come up.  We are happy to see you guys utilizing the Mutant Gene folder for its intended use.  So yeah, let's just jump into all of the interesting stuff...

Interview

^Astralseed Interviews *Crimson-Mane

How long have you been drawing equines?

I've been drawing horses for as long as I can remember. There have been gaps here and there throughout my life but I always end up coming back to it. I've known for a while that it's part of who I am and without it, my life just doesn't seem complete. I think I'll be drawing horses until I can no longer hold a pencil!

What drew you to want to draw equines?

My love of drawing horses started when I began reading 'The Silver Brumby', a novel series by Australian author Elyne Mitchell at a very young age. The way the horses were described and the land that surrounded them was so captivating and inspiring I just couldn't stop reading and drawing. The animated movie 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron' with its gorgeous animation also inspired me years later. Today I'm happy to have developed my own drawing style and my cast of characters are like my children.

Do you have any tips or special techniques which might help others who wish to draw equines?

Learn from the inside out. Study equine anatomy as much as possible. Learn the skeletal structure first, then the muscles. Watch horse videos to observe how they move and draw, draw, draw. Any spare moment you have, whether it's waiting for the bus or watching TV, draw as much as you can, and enjoy it. Don't stress about not being as good as you'd like to be, just draw for the love of drawing and relax. You'll improve in time. But in all honesty, you never stop learning.

What are your favorite equine related pieces from your own gallery?

And your favorite equine related piece from another deviants gallery?

... and maaany many more!

Would you like to say anything in closing?

Just a thankyou to the group Unique-Equines for asking me to do this interview, and to those who read it. I hope you found it entertaining in some way. Keep drawing and stay happy!

Horse Art Trade anyone? Closed

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 29, 2013, 8:29 PM
Hi guys,
I'm willing to open up 10 spots for art trades.  First come first served.  Please before asking for a spot consider that I wish to draw horse art and wish to get horse art in return.  So if you have no interest in drawing horses or getting art of horses this trade is not for you.  If you want some fun horse art from me and are willing to do some for me in return leave me a comment. (I'm looking to get some art of my new Cavitto Hale)

Welcome to Painted Portrait, a new Interview series focusing on traditional artists worth keeping an eye on.  Painted Portrait interviews aim to give the community more insight into talented traditional artists and how they came to be successful with their art.  Today we are interviewing *koyamori.

Thank you for allowing me to interview you, let's start off by having you introduce yourself.

Hello there!
My name is Cynthia, and I mainly use koyamori or maruti-bitamin for online handles.
I live in Toronto and have studied psychology and biology, and am currently attending college for graphic design.

What inspires your illustrations?

Childhood nostalgia and exploration of the unknown are some dominant themes that are great inspirations.

What are your favorite medias to work with and why do you liek them?

My favourite medium for some time is a mix of watercolours and inks. I like them because the colours are light, bright, and often can come out with unexpected results due to paint/water reacting with the paper.

What are your tools of the trade?

Some tools I always end up using are nib pens for inking, sable hair brushes for painting, and loads and loads of watercolour. These days I like to line with Pentel's red mechanical pencil because it dissolves nicely as water is added and adds a warm tone to the picture.

How long, on average, does it take you to finish one of your illustrations?

On average, probably 2 hours. Some sketchier paintings can take all of 20 minutes, but the detailed ones take up to 10+ hours.

What inspires your stlye, how did you come by it?

Tove Jansson who is the author and artist behind the Moomin comics/novels inspired me stylistically. Also, Igarashi Mikio who created Bonobono influenced my general philosophy in terms of themes I guess. Styles develop organically over the years, so there are definitely many more artists and designers who have influenced me, but these two would be a big part of that.

At what age did you begin painting and do you have any formal training (art school etc)?

I started to paint at 15 or 16, mainly for a high school art class. I don't have formal training, but I did tag along to a few drawing classes and life drawing sessions.

Are there any artists or other inspirations which have helped you become inspired and or progress with your art?

Since artists have already been mentioned, the other major inspiration toward art would probably be my childhood. I spent the first few years of my life in China where there was a lot of change and the countrysides were quickly being rebuilt into small cities. When I moved to Japan, there was a lot of nature in conjunction to human living, and I was exposed to the culture there.
I think having moved around a lot and seeing the different ways in which people live was a big influence.

What is the most rewarding aspect of completing a work of art for you?

I enjoy the painting process the most, because it helps me relax and for that moment it's the one thing I need to focus on.

What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?

Draw as much as you can everyday.

Is there anything else you'd like to say in closing?

Thank you for reading!

Dance backwards, darlingA confession:
ma, there are seahorses dancing in the library.
Autumn has come to my hometown.
Today; cool, clear and sunny--
April, a stuttering fool.
3am, and kings slumber;
Sunday falls heavy,
eyes wet with gasoline.
Splits lips upon starsMorning
                 splits
open, like orange-flesh
cradled
in a palm.

I tuck consonants between my
         lips/
draw moon-craters in my eyes; I make wishes
                         upon stars
that are too far away to realise and hope
that somehow things will
change. Yet

the sun is still a mere hole
               in the
                                   sky.
SummertimeSummertime, and white
         picket fences lean softly
against dew-soaked grass.
What beauty isn'tto be
